ODU basketball jerseys stolen

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - When the Old Dominion University men's basketball team returned from Richmond Saturday night, they noticed something missing.

Coach Blaine Taylor told 10 On Your Side someone picked the lock to the locker room and stole team apparel.

Taylor said this is a first for any of his teams.

"Occasionally, you'll have a bloody uniform by the bench or a single uniform someone gets at because it's in a game environment," said Taylor. "Like someone takes a jersey off and throws it in the air, but I've never had a break-in like this."

Taylor estimates half to two-thirds of the uniforms and team shoes were stolen.

"They took uniforms that would fit someone of a slighter build," said Taylor. "They didn't take real big, big jerseys."

ODU police are investigating the theft.

There was a mixed martial arts event at the Ted Saturday, but it's not clear if the event has anything to do with the missing gear.

Taylor says officials will review surveillance cameras in the Ted Constant Convocation Center for possible leads.

The team plays Northeastern Monday night at the Ted. They will wear the road game blue jerseys for that match up.

"It's almost odd we're doing a 'blue out,' and someone steals uniforms, so we'll be wearing blue."

Taylor called Nike at 1:30 a.m. Sunday to order new uniforms. Nike told him new white jerseys should arrive in time for the CAA Tournament in February.

A police report was filed with ODU University Police and the incident is currently under investigation.
