HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - What a difference a year makes.
The Friday forecast calls for clear skies and cool temperatures, however, one year ago, the Hampton Roads area was under water. A powerful Nor'easter flooded streets and cars, prompted school and business closings, knocked out power and knocked down trees.
The remnants of Hurricane Ida stalled along the East Coast. By Thursday, November 12, it was clear it was going to be a major weather event. In addition to the rain and tidal flooding, there were reported wind gusts near 70 mph in some areas. The significant flooding was due to the tide levels, which rose to nearly 8 ft. in some spots.
A year later, one WAVY.com user said she will never forget the Nor'easter - her son was born during it. She said the power went out as soon as she arrived at the hospital and had to run on generator power all night. Another woman recalls waking up to the sound of her car alarm. She ran outside thinking someone was stealing her car and instead found water up to the side mirrors of the car, which was parked in Olde Towne Portsmouth.
"It was very busy for me," WAVY Meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler recounted. "I not only had to do a brief boat ride to work one morning, but I also slept here at the station overnight that last big night."
