VDOT: Cheap fixes caused pothole mess

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Officials told 10 On Your Side Monday that cheap fixes got washed out in heavy rains last week, leaving behind a pothole-laden road. 

“This was a major rehabilitation project that we have needed for some time," VDOT's Lauren Hansen told 10 On Your Side. "We have identified it, and allocated money to fix it.”

VDOT usually uses temporary cold mix asphalt during the winter until the warmer months.

Last Friday morning's rainstorm lasted several hours and opened up potholes along eastbound Interstate 264. The interstate had been treated with a lower quality mix and crews spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday treating  the interstate with a hot mix asphalt that should be sturdier.

Hansen responded to critics who say VDOT is reactive instead of proactive.

"We have $40 million worth on contracts to be designated, to be advertised or that are ongoing," Hansen said.
