VDOT preparing for snowy, icy weather

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - VDOT says the organization is prepared to handle snow and icy conditions Saturday evening.

Last week's heavy rainfall exposed several potholes on Interstate 264 eastbound and left many drivers with costly damage.

"We've done so much repairs over the last week," Lauren Hansen with VDOT said. "We're really confident that the repairs will hold up especially with the switch in materials that we've used."

Instead of the cold mix that washed away during last week's rain, VDOT contractors TME Enterprises, Inc. is using hot mix to repair the potholes.

TME Enterprises would not talk to WAVY.com about whether their pothole repairs would hold up against the forecasted wintry mix.

TME Enterprises Vice President of Operations Steve Pecaut would only speak on their plans for treating the roads when the the snow comes.

"We have about 30-plus trucks which means 70-plus people," Pecaut said. "We will be staged around 12 p.m. waiting for the event to come in."

Due to the expected half inch of snow, VDOT has pumped the breaks on pothole repairs Saturday. The concrete work on I-264 being done by Curtis Contracting will end Saturday at 6 a.m. then pick back up Sunday at 7 p.m. through 5 a.m. on Monday.
