VB councilman's assault charge withdrawn

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has withdrawn a charge against a Virginia Beach councilman accused of domestic violence.

Councilman John Uhrin was arrested on Oct. 6 after neighbors claimed they saw Uhrin punch his wife three times in the head and the side before she fell to the ground during an altercation.

Another neighbor told WAVY.com that wasn’t true and both Uhrin and his wife Catherine denied the claims.

"We had a verbal confrontation," Catherine Uhrin said in October. "We are extremely embarrassed it happened in the driveway. I am an impatient person. I was beeping on the horn, it attracted attention and then we had a verbal confrontation. It escalated into something it wasn't."

Wednesday, Amanda Howie with the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office told WAVY.com the evidence against Uhrin did not rise to the level of domestic assault. The charge was nolle prosequi.

"I wish this would have been settled at the scene, but the police acted graciously and it was difficult for everyone involved," Uhrin told WAVY.com Wednesday. "We are happy to have this behind us."

While the incident happened in Virginia Beach, the Norfolk CA’s Office served as the special prosecutor in the case due to a conflict of interest.
