Two people robbed at ODU

One robbed at gunpoint

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - In the first week of school for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, at least two people have been attacked on or near campus.  One of the victims was robbed at gunpoint, police said.

Within and around the beauty of ODU's campus, something dark is happening police want to bring to light, and they're doing it by sending out campus-wide alerts.

"...ODU student was robbed by two teenage black males with a gun in the vicinity...oh!," exclaimed ODU Freshman Deneisha Hollis.

Hollis was shocked to read the alert on her phone stating a "non-ODU" student was robbed at gunpoint near the England House residence hall early Sunday morning.

"Right over there I believe," said Deneisha pointing at the England House just yards away from where she lives.

"Good thing I wasn't here last night. That would have freaked me out."

For ODU students, there's something even more startling.  Less than 24 hours before that attack, police say an Old Dominion student was attacked by four or five men who stole his wallet.  That incident happened on 40th Street and Bluestone Avenue just off of campus.

"To hear that, it really scares me," said ODU freshman Marina Korliopoulos.

The alerts tell students to be very careful while walking around campus, something Marina says she does. "I always travel in big groups, like, I call my friends from the football team, like three of the guys and we always walk together."

Investigators say no one, male or female, should ever walk anywhere alone.  Now, thanks to the e-Alerts, students know to be on the lookout.

"Maybe it is good to have an alert system on my phone," said Deneisha.

Police say they're canvassing the area, looking for suspects.  If you notice anything strange or out of place happening on campus, ODU police want you to call them immediately at 683-4000.
