Two arrested for theater burglaries

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Two men were arrested in a series of burglaries at the Virginia Stage Company and Governor's School for the Arts in Norfolk.

Kwame Parker, 20, of the 1600 block of Melon Street, and Devonte Speller, 20, of the 1500 block of Greenleaf Drive, confessed to the burglaries in addition to several residential burglaries, according to Norfolk police.

Police said the Virginia Stage Company and Governor's School for the Arts were burglarized on December 13 and December 28, 2011.

On January 19, 2012, the suspects were stopped by patrol officers who responded to residential burglaries in the Poplar Halls area.

Detectives recognized the suspects from a Crime Line tip and questioned their involvement in the previous burglaries.

Speller was charged with three counts of breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony, three counts of grand larceny, one count of larceny with the intent to sell, two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony, and one count of attempting to commit a non-capital offense.

Parker was charged with three counts of breaking and entering with the intent to commit a felony, three counts of grand larceny, one count of receipt of a stolen firearm, two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony, and one count of attempting to commit a non-capital offense.

The investigation is continuing.
