Two-alarm fire sparks at Norfolk home

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Investigators say an electrical malfunction sparked a fire inside of a garage at a Norfolk home early Wednesday morning.

Capt. Mike Hicks with Norfolk Fire and Rescue said crews were dispatched to the 3800 block of Dare Circle around 5:20 a.m. for a report of a garage fire. Hicks said the garage is attached to the home, but the fire did not spread to the home.

While a second alarm was called, crews worked to knock down hot spots. Fire crews closed a one-block portion of Dare Circle around the fire and several fire crews were on scene.

The homeowner said his smoke detector was not working, but a strange taste woke him up.

"At approximately 4:30 p.m. I began to have an acid taste in my mouth," homeowner Danny Ginn said. "I smelled some smoke, rolled out of bed and the house wasn't engulfed.".
