NORFOLK, Va., (WAVY) - In Hampton Roads, some people are already feeling the effects of the sequester. Some Newport News shipyard workers have received WARN notices, deployments have been delayed, and this is only the beginning.
Reaction to the sequester at Naval Station Norfolk is mixed. Some service members tell WAVY.com they are waiting to see how bad the cuts will be, and others are preparing themselves for the worse.
A few sailors who spoke with WAVY.com say they are frustrated that lawmakers could not reach a compromise to avoid the $85 billion in federal cuts. President Obama says the sequester could affect defense contracts, and ship-building contracts.
One Navy Information Systems Technicians says he and his co-workers are bracing themselves for some hard times because of the sequester.
"There might end up being like 15 to 20 civilians who are laid off or told to go on leave. A lot of civilians I work with will instead of working five days a week will work three days a week which is going to take them way down on budgeting issues," Information Systems Technician Justin Lee said. "People could lose their houses or think they could lose their houses over all this."
