Sailor struck by train passes away

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A sailor who was struck by a train while trying to cross railroad tracks on Hampton Boulevard earlier this month has died.

Police say around 4 a.m. Jacob Sportsman, who was on foot, tried to beat a train at the railroad tracks in the  7700 block of Hampton Blvd.

Four ODU ROTC students had assisted the Sportsman following the accident. 

Sportsman lost both legs in the accident and was taken to Sentara Norfolk Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
