Congressman discusses ODU campus safety

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Representatives Elijah Cummings and Robert Scott met with Old Dominion President John R. Broderick and Norfolk Public Safety Officials Monday morning.

Elijah is the uncle of slain ODU student Christopher Cummings, who was killed June 10 in his off-campus home.

This meeting is said to address student safety measures both on campus and in the surrounding communities.

"I believe both agencies are working hard to solve this and I am pleased with their efforts. They got recommendations they have implemented. They are doing that," said Congressman Cummings.

Christopher's father James was also at the meeting.

Following the meeting, Christopher's family gathered for a 12:15 p.m. press conference at his former residence in the 800 block of W. 42nd St in Norfolk.

In addition to these meetings, local businesses are pulling together to offer a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Christopher's killer.

The group offering the reward is the 35th Street Merchant's Association .

"We all must do what we can to have a safe environment for our children to be educated in," said the president of the association, Carlos Howard.

Howard said that the group offered a reward a few years ago when a Norfolk police officer was killed and they believe that it helped police make an arrest in that case.

Funeral services were held in Baltimore for Christopher Cummings on Saturday.
