NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A state investigation has found a Norfolk police trainee who died after academy training last year suffered repeated hits to the head.
Forty-year-old recruit John Kohn collapsed during self-defense training on Dec. 9 and died in a hospital Dec. 18. Police had said Kohn had received punches to the head from an instructor before and after colliding with another recruit.
The state Labor Department investigation also found a second recruit participating in the same group as Kohn also suffered serious head injuries from the training.
The department's findings were released to The Virginian-Pilot under a Freedom of Information Act request.
Police officials declined comment to the newspaper.
Training procedures at the Norfolk Police Department's police academy were later revised to ban instructors from hitting recruits in the head.
