NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A state police motorist assist unit on the side of the road was hit by a driver trying to avoid hitting another vehicle in front of him, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.
Virginia State Police Motorist Assist Unit B. Tetterton was assisting a disabled motorist on the shoulder of I-264 West at Ballentine Boulevard around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit by a Jeep Cherokee, Anaya said.
Police said the driver of the Jeep, Frederick Bines Jr., of Norfolk, came upon traffic and noticed it was stopped.
To keep from hitting the vehicle in front of him, police said he swerved off the right side of the road and struck Tetterton's vehicle.
Bines was taken to the hospital with a minor injury. He was also charged with Reckless Driving and No Valid Operators license.
Tetterton was inside the vehicle at the time and was not injured.
