ODU moves to tighten gun ban

NORFOLK, Va. (AP/WAVY) - Old Dominion University officials are working to tighten the school's gun ban.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that ODU's Board of Visitors could consider a regulation drafted by administrators at its December meeting.

The regulation would ban all guns, except those carried by police officers, from campus buildings and sports events. It's modeled on a regulation at George Mason University that recently was upheld by the Virginia Supreme Court.

Old Dominion's existing ban is in the form of a policy, not a regulation.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli issued an opinion in July saying a similar policy at the University of Virginia doesn't apply to holders of concealed weapons permits. Cuccinelli wrote that a regulation is more formal than a university policy and carries the force of law in Virginia.

The College of William and Mary is reviewing its gun policy and considering a regulation as well.
