NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - They want change, but they are not sure how to get it. It is day 18 in the 'Occupy Norfolk' movement, one of the many protests across the country sparked by 'Occupy Wall Street.'
But a CNN poll revealed that while most Americans don't trust Wall Street, a large majority don't care about or understand the protests.
10 On Your Side went to the Occupy Norfolk campsite to ask what the group hopes to accomplish.
Protestors occupy more than a dozen tents at the camp 24/7.
"As of today, I've been out here for two weeks camping out in this tent over here," Tim Brooks said. Brooks, 22, showed 10 On Your Side his tent, where he keeps a sleeping bag, guitar and not much more.
The group has a permit for 30 people to sleep at the site on Commerce Place, across the street from the Bank of America building. But the Norfolk movement is over 4,000 followers strong on Facebook .
A rough draft of Occupy Norfolk's mission statement is posted online and says the group hopes "to precipitate change, to create a just and equitable society and stand against oppression, inequality and unnatural coercion."
10 On Your Side asked how they intended on reaching that goal.
"Oh, I have no idea no idea," laughed one protestor.
Another protestor named Rebecca held a sign that read, "I'm here for my Dad". She said she simply wants the rich and powerful to listen. "I get really upset about people who work all their life and just really try to do right by their families and do right by everyone and then they get kicked to the curb," she said.
The protest is Occupy Norfolk's way of kicking back and they promise to move their protest to the polls in November 2012.
The group has no designated leader and makes decisions based on a majority vote. Occupy Norfolk meets at 7 p.m. each evening on Commerce Place in Norfolk. Everyone is invited.
