NPS names new superintendent

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk Public Schools has named its new Superintendent, who will begin working with the school system on July 1.

According to the Facebook page of Norfolk Public Schools, the school board voted 6-1 to award a contract to Dr. Samuel T. King of Rockdale County, Ga.

"I'm extremely excited. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to serve that community," he said

King is a native of Smithville, Ga., and has more than 25 years of experience in public education. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercer University, a master's degree and Special Degree from the University of West Georgia and a doctorate degree from the University of Sarasota.

King was also named Outstanding Educator by the George Association of Educational Leaders in 2008.

"We are excited about this selection," said Dr. Kirk T. Houston, Sr. "Dr. King has proven success in areas that are vital to us right now."

"Hopefully he'll have more than a year because it takes time to get an agenda set and get it achieved takes time, " Thomas Calhoun, president of the Norfolk Federation of Teachers told WAVY.com.  The previous superintendent, Dr. Richard Bentley, was on the job for 16 months.

The school board also thanked Michael Spencer, who served as interim superintendent.

"We thank Mr. Spencer for doing an excellent job leading the school division through this period," Houston added.
