One dead in Rite Aid shooting

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a man died after a shooting inside a Norfolk Rite Aid Thursday afternoon.

Norfolk police were called to the store, located at the intersection Tidewater and Cromwell Drives, at 2 p.m..

Police say two male customers began to argue inside the store and the fight ended in gunshots.

"The two became involved in an altercation inside, a verbal altercation," said Chris Amos, with Norfolk Police. "And this escalated to gunshots being fired between the two."

Police say both men were carrying guns and both shot at each other. Other customers and employees were inside the store at the time, but none of them were hurt.

Outside the store, passersby noticed all the commotion.

"Norfolk police officers were everywhere, ambulances, people running, it was pretty scary," said one witness.

One woman told WAVY.com she saw one of the victims get into an ambulance.

"The first one I seen, I was concerned about because he was covered all the way up," said the woman.

And, as for other customers who come here often, they say they've lost their sense of security.

"Arguments happen everywhere," said one passerby. "And you can get shot anywhere you go nowadays."

There were rumors on scene that a member of law enforcement was one of the victims. Norfolk police say that is not true.

The shooting victims were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. One suspect had life-threatening injuries and died shortly before 5 p.m. The other is expected to live.

Police are still investigating what caused the fight.

There was another shooting at the same Rite Aid on Christmas Eve 2007. No one was hit, but one bullet shattered a car window.
