NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk Mayor Paul D. Fraim delivered the 2013 State of the City to a large crowd on Feb. 8.

The City live tweeted updates on its official Twitter page throughout the event.

There were 1100 people in attendance for the State of the City address, which began with a moment to honor the late State Senator Yvonne Miller, who passed away on July 3 in her Norfolk home.

Among the crowd was " Charles the Monarch ", a Norfolk dog who gained international notoriety after he was mistaken for a lion.

Mayor Fraim announced that all crimes are down in the city, while population and economic growth is up.

"Crime reduction is real in the city. Property crime, violent crime is down for almost 10 years in a row, so we think we're making some progress," Fraim told 10 On Your Side.

One of the biggest projects for Norfolk in the coming year is Waterside Live! which is expected to bring in more than 1,000 new jobs and $93 million in revenue, according to Mayor Fraim.

"Kordish will invest $28 million in Waterside Live for a restaurant, market and performance area," Fraim said.

Fraim also explained the need for an improved transportation system in the city, among many other improvements.

"We need another crossing of the harbor. We need to worry about flooding and sea level rise. There're a number of big ticket items as well as improving our infrastructure," Fraim said.

City spokeswoman Lori Crouch also confirmed Friday that The City of Norfolk has reached an agreement to buy the Traveler’s Inn motel at 800 East Ocean View Boulevard, for $800,000.  A fire destroyed half of the motel in February 2012 .  Details on what the city plans to do with the property were not released.  This will be the first expansion to the Ocean View park and beach in decades.
