New lights on the way for I-264

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - As Daylight Saving Time approaches and nights get longer, one stretch of road stands to get a lot more dangerous. Everyday, plenty of cars travel the I-264/64 interchange in Norfolk, but there are no street lights.

Four years ago, 28 aging light poles were taken down, leaving area motorists in the dark once the sun goes down. Officials say a lack of money was behind the lights not being re-installed.

"If you can't see and it's low visibility that would be pretty concerning," Virginia Beach's Steve Bancroft said.

VDOT told WAVY.com new lights are on the way. Contracting bids have already been accepted and the area could be lit by early 2012.

"I think it would be a lot safer for drivers," Bear Tamez, of Virginia Beach, added.

VDOT said it's sorting though the accepted proposals and next week a contractor will be chosen.
