NORFOLK, Va (WAVY) - A Mo Money customer called 10 On Your Side after she says she received a letter from the IRS stating that she owes them money.

"So they told me that I owe them like over $1,300," said Sherita Moore.

Moore showed WAVY.com the paperwork that subtracted $1,351 from her refund.

"It says that we believe there's a miscalculation on your 2011 form 10-40," Moore read.

The bad news is her earned income tax credit was wrong. The good news is the IRS deducted the amount before they sent her the refund.

"Unfortunately, some of these people have received their check and spent the money." Carolyn Buzek, with Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, said.

Buzek explained that no matter where you get your taxes done if you think there's a problem, don't spend the money because the IRS will come after it.

"The good news is you can file an amended return to correct the information before the end of tax season. There won't be any penalty and interest," Buzek said.

Those penalties and interest start adding up after April 17.

Moore is relieved she won't have to go through that, but says she will be filing a police report if she doesn't get the rest of her refund by the end of the day Tuesday.

Some other Mo Money customers in Norfolk say they are also still waiting for their refunds.

10 On Your Side asked the IRS for any advice that could be shared with viewers. In an email, a spokesman wrote that the IRS is not permitted to discuss a particular or specific taxpayer's tax matter and that it would be inappropriate to provide comment on any real or hypothetical examples.
