NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY.com) - A nationwide search is underway for Norfolk Public Schools ' next superintendent. From behind a closed door, former Norfolk Schools Superintendent, Dr. Richard Bentley, had no comment. After 15 months on the job, Dr. Bentley officially turned in his letter of resignation Monday.

"We reached a mutual agreement that we needed to end the relationship as superintendent," said school board Chairman Dr. Kirk Houston.

Houston said it came down to an accreditation issue. 10 Norfolk schools missed accreditation. Another issue for the board, graduation rates.

"We are concerned about educating our children and the best approach to doing that and having the right person in leadership to get that done," Houston said.

The decision came a few months into the new school year, leaving some to wonder why it didn't happen sooner.

Houston said Bentley was not on notice, but that the school board was in constant conversation with him.

Per his contract, Dr. Bentley get a severance package of one year's salary, totaling $236,540. The money will come from the school district's budget.

"We want to demonstrate to a future candidate for the position that we are a fair and reasonable district," Houston said.
