NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A Norfolk man is behind bars after he tried to carjack a woman while running from officers, according to police.
Police say Terry Leonard Matthews, 56, was being chased by officers in relation to a larceny around noon when he climbed in the passenger's side of a woman's car in the parking lot of the Southern Shopping Center along Tidewater Drive.
Matthews told the woman to take him out of the area but she saw police officers approaching the car and got out, taking her car keys with her.
Police arrested Matthews and charged him with felony third offense petit larceny and resisting arrest.
He is being held at Norfolk City Jail.
