NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Police, fire, and HAZMAT crews responded to a possible meth lab in the 1200 block of Strand Street Monday afternoon.
The situation kept many people inside their homes, as crews closed Strand Street from Chesapeake Avenue to Alexander Street during the investigation.
"'See the fire trucks man," neighbor Domoneek Gillard said to his son. "Look at the fire trucks."
The trucks clogged up the intersection of Strand and Alexander Streets for almost eight hours. WAVY.com was told fire crews were called after a woman reported that her sister's boyfriend had a meth lab inside the home.
"I just thank God that no one got hurt and they find out what's going on," witness Eric Johnson said.
As crews moved in, the crowds watching grew.
"A meth lab, we don't' need that. We don't need that around here," Johnson added.
Johnson has relatives who lives next door to the suspected lab.
"I wanted to make sure that my family was alright," Johnson said.
Crews found chemicals in a bedroom and in the shed out back According to Battalion Chief Harry Worley there wasn't enough there to cause a major HAZMAT situation.
"I'm just glad it didn't blow up," Johnson exclaimed.
The chemicals were cleaned up.
The DEA and police department are still at the home to collect evidence surrounding the meth lab. Currently, one person is in police custody. No word on any charges.
