NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A 16-year-old charged in the mob beating of two Virginian-Pilot reporters appeared in court Tuesday, on two counts assault by mob, and one count participation in a riot.
He was already in custody on a May 10 charge of grand larceny of a car. The teen also faces a petty larceny charge, another grand larceny of auto charge and a burglary with a grand larceny charge.
His attorney, Kirk Berkhimer, asked for bond, but that was denied due to the list of charges, and the judge thought he was a risk to others.
As he left the court, the teenager sobbed and said, "I was not there, man," in reference to the beating of the Pilot reporters.
The young man also started to cry in court when he found out no family members were in court to support him. His father is absent, his mother has died, and his Aunt is the legal guardian. She was in court yesterday, but he was not brought to court from the detention home due to a transportation issue. The aunt was unable to attend the court hearing Tuesday.
Norfolk Police have now arrested four teens in connection with the April 14 attack at the corner of Brambleton Avenue and Church Street in Downtown Norfolk. They are all scheduled to appear in Court on May 30. The four are a 13-year-old, and three 16-year-olds.
