NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Tuesday was the first day on the job for Norfolk's new acting chief of police.

Sharon Chamberlin will be taking over over for outgoing Chief Bruce Marquis, and she's no stranger to the City of Norfolk.

She has served the department for more than 36 years, most recently as the Department's Senior Assistant Chief. During her time, she was the first "patrol" woman to achieve the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Assistant Chief, a news release from the Norfolk Police Department said.

She also teaches Criminal Justice Ethics and Homeland Security at Old Dominion University.

Her predecessor retired amidst heavy controversy last month.

Marquis' retirement doesn't officially start until April 1.
