NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Most places cancelled their Fourth of July fireworks, but in Norfolk, the show went on. Organizers moved the fireworks to 8:30 p.m.
Earlier Monday, Hampton Roads saw a different type of show fill the horizon as strong storms blew though the area.
"It came though pretty strong," said Virginia Beach's Frank Hawkes. "There was a lot of lightning and a lot of thunder."
Hawkes and his group were up early to grab a picnic table to make sure they had the best view of the fireworks at Mount Trashmore.
"Yeah, we were here at five in the morning," said Lisbeth Perez, "It gets really full, so we went here to get seats for everyone. We are really disappointed there are no fireworks here now."
Officials decided it would be best to cancel the show. It was news that no one wanted to hear.
"That really bums us out," Hawkes added, "We just figured on this day they weren't going to cancel."
The lightning show could also be seen in Downtown Norfolk.
"It was beautiful out and then all the sudden everybody rushed in," said Brian Mayher, "We are ready for them now, so hopefully the fireworks would be good."
The show at Town Point Park did go off. It was one of the only shows in the area.
