NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings is calling a Newport News man a "person of interest" in the shooting death of his nephew, 20-year-old Christopher Cummings.

Congressman Cummings says his nephew and the "person of interest" knew each other. Court documents, dated August 15, show police issued a search warrant for the home of the 20-year-old Newport News man.

Christopher Cummings was shot to death in his home near the Old Dominion University campus in June. His uncle says the family waited almost three months for police to make progress, but credited them with moving forward with the search warrant. Congressman Cummings says he believes the lead could be a big break in the case.

"I am convinced that the person of interest is somebody who will lead to some significant progress in this case," said Cummings at a press conference held outside the home Monday.

He visited Christopher's apartment at 867 West 42nd Street to bring public attention to the warrant.

"I'm begging you if you know anything about this case to come to police and tell what you know," said Cummings. He is warning other Old Dominion University students to listen to safety tips distributed by the university.

"Whoever the persons were who did this, believe me, will do it again," Cummings said. "You don't kill somebody that viciously and not do it again, and that person is lurking out here."

10 On Your Side learned there is a second search warrant in the case, but it is sealed until an arrest is made.
