NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Norfolk fire crews say a fire along Virginia Beach Boulevard Monday morning originated in a trash chute.

Capt. Mike Hicks with the Norfolk and Rescue said firefighters were dispatched to the Cogic Highrise Apartments in the 2400 block of East Virginia Beach Boulevard for a report of a fire alarm activation sometime before 9:30 a.m.

The fire originated in a trash chute that was clogged. Hicks said someone threw something in the chute that ignited.

Firefighters were able to gain control of the small fire, which was on a lower floor of the building. Minor smoke was seen on a couple of floors, Hicks added.

The building was evacuated and no one was injured.
