Servicemember charged with making bombs

NOROFLK, Va. (WAVY) - A 25-year-old member of the military has been charged in connection to several Molotov cocktails that were thrown at his girlfriend's apartment Monday afternoon.

According to Capt. Mike Hicks with the Norfolk Fire Department, Norfolk fire and police units, as well as agents with the ATF and FBI, responded to the Beechwood Apartments near Naval Station Norfolk in the 7800 block of Ogden Avenue Monday afternoon.

Hicks says the investigation appears to be the result of a domestic incident between a couple. He says a man, identified as Christopher Eure of Norfolk, threw four Molotov cocktails at his girlfriend's apartment. Only one ignited, landed in the bushes and created a small fire.

The woman was inside of the apartment at the time with a small child. Neither were injured.

Hicks says a backpack was found close to the scene and following an investigation by the bomb squad, it appears as though Eure brought the four cocktails inside of the backpack and left it outside. A robot checked for explosives in the backpack which turned out to be empty but smelled of carbon fuel.

Eure has been arrested and charged with six counts of manufacturing fire bombs and one count of arson. Additional charges may be pending. Hicks said Eure is an active-duty service member, however, his branch is unknown at this time.

Hicks said Eure may face federal charges from the ATF and FBI.

The 7800 block of Ogden Avenue was closed as of 4:30 p.m. and opened back up shortly after 6 p.m. Hicks says residents were allowed to leave but no one was allowed to enter the apartments.
