NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Amtrak will begin passenger rail service to Norfolk by the end of the year.
Gov. Bob McDonnell's office said Wednesday that the service will begin by Dec. 31, which is 10 months earlier than originally projected.
The rail line will connect Norfolk with Richmond, which will allow passengers to travel to Washington and as far north as Boston. The round-trip train will bring intercity passenger rail service to Norfolk for the first time since 1977.
The new route is expected to reduce congestion on traffic-filled interstates. The Norfolk station will be at Harbor Park in downtown Norfolk, which will allow passengers to connect with the city's light rail service.
