NORFOLK, Va (WAVY) - Parents and students were alarmed Friday when threats of gang violence caused an increased police presence at school.

Karen Tanner of Norfolk Public Schools told WAVY.com parents of students attending Granby High School received an Edulink phone message from Principal Ted Daughtrey early Friday morning.

The phone message informed parents that there would be additional police presence in the building and on the school grounds all day in reference to rumors of possible gang violence at the school. Principal Daughtrey said, " There have been no indications this morning that these rumors are true, however, the police will be there to ensure the safety of the students."

Daughtrey said he appreciates the calls of concern and would like to reassure parents that the students are in a safe and secure learning environment.

If you have additional concerns, please feel free to contact the school office at 757-451-4110.
