NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A man in a wheelchair struck by a vehicle in Norfolk Wednesday evening passed away from his injuries.

According to Chris Amos with the Norfolk Police Department, the accident occurred at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 5600 block of Tidewater Drive when a vehicle traveling north struck a man in a wheelchair in a crosswalk.   Amos said the man was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

He has been identified as James Gregory Camp, 67, of Norfolk. He lived close to the scene.

Camp's friends at Lakewood Plaza, an apartment building for seniors, say he was coming home from 7-Eleven that night when he was struck by a car. They said the intersection of Tidewater Drive and Norview Avenue is dangerous.

"Sometimes, when you come across that walkway, people don't even stop when the light's red," Patti Furman said. "They just keep on going and really don't care."

Police are working to determine who had the right of way at the time of the crash.
