NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -

A former city council member won the 89th House District seat in the General Assembly.

Daun S. Hester, a Democrat, prevailed over James J. St John, an independent, with an overwhelming 93 percent of the vote.

More than 1,200 voters cast their ballots in the special election Tuesday out of the more than 48,000 eligible.

Norfolk funeral home operator Kenny Alexander held the seat until he replaced the late Yvonne Miller in the state Senate.
