NORFOLK, Va. - The FBI's Norfolk division is increasing awareness of potential fraud by organizations requesting relief funds for Haitian earthquake victims. They have set up a hotline to report such instances of fraud.

As citizens are being solicited through emails, grassroots campaigns, mail and phone calls, the FBI suggests you follow these guidelines before considering making a donation:

  1. Delete any unsolicited e-mails as they may contain misleading information, and files with viruses.
  2. Refrain from clicking links that may pop up on other websites.
  3. Verify the legitimacy of individuals and non-profit organizations that claim to be helping victims.
  4. Use reputable organizations and do not rely on individuals to make your contributions.
  5. Do not share personal or financial information with anyone claiming to be a surviving victim or official.
  6. Do not make checks payable to individuals.

The disaster fraud hotline can be reached at (866) 720-5721 or by sending an email to disaster@leo.gov
