NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The city of Norfolk has reopened its flood gates as Hurricane Earl makes a passing glance along Virginia's coast.
City spokesman Bob Batcher said Friday only a couple of streets have seen flooding in a city that often is subject to storm flooding from tidal surges.
Batcher said, "We dodged a bullet on this one."
He said one good thing about the storm was residents of the port city of 230,000 seemed to heed the warnings and stocked up on supplies. He said it was a good trial run for other storms that might head for Virginia this hurricane season.
The Virginian-Pilot reported that the body of a city resident who went swimming in the Elizabeth River was found Friday. Batcher said the death is not considered storm-related.
