NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News firefighters fought three separate fires in the northern end of the city this weekend.
No one suffered injuries, and the Red Cross assisted 12 displaced residents.
The latest fire destroyed one mobile home and damaged another in Newport News Sunday night.
A Newport News fire spokesman said crews responded to mobile home fire the 200 block of Stardust Circle at 8:03 p.m. Crews arrived to find one trailer engulfed in flames and an adjacent mobile home with damage from radiant heat.
Spokesman Scott Liebold said fire destroyed the first mobile home and the second sustained enough damage to force fire officials to condemn the home.
The fire displaced four adults and one child in the first trailer and two adults in the second. Fire officials called the Red Cross to assist both families. The cause remains under investigation.
On Saturday evening, firefighters responded to a house fire in the 300 block of Summerlake Drive. Crews arrived at 5:36 p.m. to find smoke coming from the home.
Firefighters contained the flames to the room where the fire started, but the home sustained smoke damage throughout. Fire officials estimated the damage between $10,000 and $15,000, and investigators continue to search for the cause.
The displaced occupants decided to stay with friends.
Also on Saturday, crews responded to an apartment fire in the 300 block of Deputy Lane. The first unit arrived at 11:04 p.m. to find smoke coming from the apartment. Firefighters brought fire under control in less than five minutes, but the apartment sustained significant fire damage to a bedroom and smoke damage throughout the rest of the apartment.
Liebold said children playing with a lighter in the bedroom caused the fire. He estimated damage at $15,000, and fire officials condemned the unit.
The Red Cross has assisted the one adult and four children who lived in the apartment.
