NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - PeoplExpress Airlines Inc. has named the owner of a United Football League team as its chairman of the board.
The fledgling Newport News-based airline said in a news release on Wednesday that William E. Mayer would fill the position. Mayer owns the Virginia Beach-based Virginia Destroyers. The team won the 2011 United Football League championship in a year in which the league's season was cut short due to financial problems.
Mayer is also senior partner of Park Avenue Equity.
The airline said in its application to federal regulators that it intends to provide service in markets that lack non-stop service, or are being underserved by current carriers.
