NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Two people were displaced after an electrical short sparked a fire in their Newport News home Wednesday night.
Acting Fire Chief Scott Liebold with the Newport News Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the 1800 block of Wickham Avenue around 10:30 p.m. for a report of a structure fire. When they arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the first floor in the kitchen area.
The cause of the fire was said to be an electrical short that ignited combustible materials that were nearby.
Liebold said the home was condemned and two adults were displaced. They have been assisted by the American Red Cross.
Additionally, crews with Dominion Virginia Power disconnected electric service at the house while fire crews shut off natural gas.
No one was injured.
