NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A space heater is being blamed on a fire that caused $25,000 in damage Thursday afternoon in Newport News.
Battalion Chief Stephen Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department said units were dispatched to the 1300 block of 36th Street for a report of a house fire around noon. Upon arrival, they found smoke and flames showing from a window of the home.
It took about 20 minutes for crews to get the fire under control. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the rear bedroom, but the home suffered extensive smoke damage.
Three adults and two children escaped the home safely but have been displaced as a result of the fire, which is being blamed on a space heater.
