NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police are searching for a woman who went missing from an assisted living facility in Newport News late Thursday night.

According to police, around 11:45 Thursday night 41-year-old Andretta Yvonne Nickson told staff at the Open Arms Assisted Living Facility at 1229 27th Street in Newport News that she was going for a walk. When she did not return the facility's staff called police.

Police say Nickson is on several medications and has not taken them as scheduled. Nickson is reported to be bipolar and diabetic.

Residents of Open Arms Assisted Living are free to come and go as they please, according to  police.

Nickson is described as a black female, with black hair, brown eyes, 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighs between 250 and 300 pounds. She was last seen wearing a blue shirt, black or blue pants and a blue knee length coat.

Police are asking anyone with knowledge of Andretta Nickson's whereabouts to call Newport News police at 757-247-2500.
