NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed crossing Jefferson Avenue in Newport News Thursday evening.

According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, police were contacted about an auto-pedestrian accident at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Eley says the pedestrian, 54-year-old Michael Ray Lassiter, was crossing Jefferson Avenue from the west side to the east side at Bellwood Road when he stepped onto the southbound far left lane and was struck by an SUV. Lassiter was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Police say Lassiter was struck by a 57-year-old Chesapeake man driving a 2001 maroon-colored Toyota Sequoia. Eley says charges are not pending for the driver.
