NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - An accident on I-64 westbound near the Victory Boulevard exit in Newport News blocked all lanes during Thursday evening's rush hour.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya, with Virginia State Police, said the four vehicle accident involved an entrapment. The crash was called in just before 4 p.m.
According to police, Krystal Scott, who was driving a 2009 Pontiac GE, made an unsafe lane change from the right lane into the path of a 2008 Honda Accord, driven by 73-year-old Patricia Hannum. Scott hit the Accord, causing the Accord to hit a 2005 Dodge Dakota in the HOV lane. Hannum's Accord struck the jersey wall, overturned and left her trapped inside.
The Dodge Dakota, driven by 60-year-old Garland Gray, also hit the jersey wall.
Meanwhile, upon coming in contact with the Accord, Scott jerked her Pontiac GE to the right and hit the right guard rail. Her Pontiac spun out of control and struck a 2005 Ford Escape, driven by John Pickett, 45.
Hannum was extricated from her vehicle and transported to Riverside Hospital. Pickett, the driver of the Ford Escape was also injured. He was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital.
I-64 westbound was shut down for several hours as crews cleared the scene.
Scott, 26, was charged with unsafe lane change. Sgt. Anaya said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
