PD: Only officers' weapons retrieved

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A suspect wanted on federal charges in Wednesday night's officer-involved shooting was arrested Thursday and "appeared" in court by phone from his hospital room.

According to Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department, the shooting stemmed from a traffic stop just before 7 p.m. at the Interstate 664 overpass near 35th Street and Madison Avenue.

The 29-year-old officer and a suspect, identified as 40-year-old Corey Antonia Moody of Hampton, both suffered non-life threatening injuries. The officer was released from the hospital the same night with facial injuries.

According to federal court documents, Moody had his initial appearance in court by phone from his hospital room where he remains in fair condition. 

At some point during the traffic stop, Moody started driving away and as he did, several shots were fired.

That night, Harold Eley with the Newport News Police Department reported to WAVY.com, "We have an injured officer and we also have an injured suspect."

After leaving the scene, Moody traveled about a mile on 35th Street and was stopped between Marshall Avenue and Madison Avenue. 

Police are now saying the undercover officer may not have been shot and his facial injuries may be from some type of flying debris. Police confirmed Thursday the only weapons found on the scene belonged to officers.

Eley and the police department will not say why Moody was stopped, but WAVY.com uncovered a federal grand jury indictment that states in March, Moody:

1. "possessed with intent to distribute... cocaine."
2. He was charged with  "Possess a firearm... in furtherance of  a drug trafficking crime"
3.  He was also charged because he was a "convicted of a felony while possessing a firearm"

That indictment led to a federal arrest warrant issued for Moody Nov. 15 for cocaine and gun charges.

According to evidence and information released, it appears as though Moody was unarmed and was shot as he was leaving the scene once in the back and once in the leg.

"They kept hollering at him to put his hands up, and he said his hands were up... he said he was shot two times," eyewitness Pamela Ebron said.

The four officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. There will be an internal investigation into what happened along with a criminal investigation by the department's homicide unit.
