NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police have secured warrants for the arrest of an alleged gunman responsible for the deadly shooting of a 49-year-old man early Saturday morning.

Police received a call around 1 a.m. for reports of shots fired and a man lying on the ground in the area of 55 Colony Square Court. Officers responded and found Patrick McWanza Hewett.  Medics took him a local hospital where doctors pronounced him dead about an hour later, according to a police spokeswoman.

Homicide detectives obtained warrants for 20-year-old Doren Ellis Lee with a last known address in the 600 block of 49th Street. The warrants include murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by felon.

Investigators said there was an argument prior to the shooting.

Hewett's death marks the city's 16th homicide this year. Police ask anyone with information about the whereabouts of Ellis to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
