NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A Newport News man allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel with a child in tow and crashed into two cars Tuesday morning.
According to Lou Thurston with the Newport News Police Department, crews responded to Warwick Boulevard between Enterprise Drive and Curtis Drive just before 8 a.m.
Thurston said a van traveling southbound was sideswiped by a Chevrolet sedan traveling in the opposite direction. The Chevrolet then crashed head-on with a BMW traveling southbound.
The driver of the Chevrolet, Collin Striggles, told officers he had fallen asleep while driving. His 4-year-old son was in the car at the time and was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was properly secured in a child safety seat at the time.
Striggles and the BMW driver, a 54-year-old man, were also hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the van was not injured.
Thurston said the officer on scene estimated all of the drivers involved did not go over the 35 mph speed limit.
Striggles was issued a traffic summons for reckless driving.
