Maintenance worker rescues fire victim

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A maintenance worker at a Newport News apartment complex is credited with pulling a fire victim to safety.

Newport News fire crews arrived at the scene in the 400 block of Manor Road shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday. They noticed smoke coming out of a broken window and later learned a maintenance worker had pulled an occupant from the burning apartment. The occupant was taken to a local hospital for observation.

The fire damage was contained to one room, according to the Newport News Fire Department.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation.
