NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - White House officials and Congressman Bobby Scott were in Newport News Wednesday morning to see how government funds for clean energy and energy-efficient projects were being spent.

The officials were in town to see how the city retrofitted some of its city vehicles to run on propane gas.

"They're benefiting because they are using a greener fuel which is cutting emissions by 30 percent," Jamison Walker with Virginia Clean Cities said. "They're benefiting because it's a domestic fuel. 98 percent of propane auto gas is refined here in the country and it's a more cost effective fuel."

Newport News estimate auto gas vehicles are saving taxpayers $22,000 per year on fuel costs.
