NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A burn victim was flown to a local hospital Monday afternoon after an accident at an auto repair shop.

Acting Chief Scott Liebold with the Newport News Fire Department said crews responded to the scene in the 4000 block of Jefferson Avenue around 1:30 p.m. Firefighters received a call for a fire in a business with one person suffering burns.

Upon arrival, crews found the 49-year-old victim and requested Nightingale to the scene to transport the man to the burn unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Liebold says the man's current conditionis unknown.

Liebold said the victim was working on a vehicle when an ignition source ignited fuel, creating a flash fire. No structural damage was reported.

The victim's family told WAVY.com the man is the co-owner of the business and was replacing a fuel pump when something caused vapors from the fuel tank to ignite.
