NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Officials say a residential fire causing upward of $35,000 in damage was most likely caused by discarded smoking material.

Chief Stephen Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department says crews were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Circuit Lane in the Denbigh neighborhood at approximately 11 a.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found smoking pouring out of the home.

Pincus says the fire was under control by 11:30 a.m. and was contained to the single townhouse. The fire started in the kitchen due to improperly discarded smoking materials in a trash can.  No one was injured.

Red Cross will be assisting two residents.
