NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Court documents show "possible blood" throughout the home of a Newport News woman missing since early September.
What could be the most telling of all is a statement made by a police captain at Kathleen Haley's apartment when the investigation began: "There may be more to the scene than a missing person."
That is a fear reiterated by her brother-in-law who says what he found in Haley's apartment before police arrived in early September is troubling.
"Just don't know what happened to her. It's like, we need closure. I don't know what's going on," Haley's brother-in-law Manuel Roman said.
While Roman is not sure what's going on, the court documents filed by Newport News Police provide insight into what happened inside Haley's apartment the day she disappeared. In one statement, a detective says a person told him she saw a man use a key to get into Haley's apartment.

She went on to say she saw that same man "walk down the stairs with an armful of something rolled up, possibly bedding..."
The bedding and the key made Roman suspicious.
"[It's] very unusual. [She's a] very private person. I don't think that anyone would have a key to her apartment. I know we didn't," Roman said.
Roman is one of the people who checked on Haley days after his family last spoke with her. Police paperwork shows Haley's computer and bed are missing. Roman told police he checked the dumpsters and found the "box spring and mattress out there had holes cut in it..." and "it appears to be dried blood on the mattresses."
It's a scene he said he would rather forget.
"I don't really want to relive that," Roman said.
Neighbors told WAVY.com they were concerned for days before the investigation into Haley's disappearance began because of the mattress in the trash.
"The Tuesday before her mother had her reported, when I went to my car there was this foul odor and I kept saying, 'What is that odor? What is that odor?' and they said, 'It's the trash,' and I said, 'Well, the trash has not been dumped before and it didn't smell like that. It smelled like a dead rat, or a dead dog, or something, something dead was in that dumpster," Vanessa Santiful said.
The court documents list cleaning supplies found scattered about Haley's apartment including two pairs of rubber gloves found inside and outside the bathtub and one pair in the kitchen. It also listed Items of clothing in a basket with suspected blood on them including "white socks, one grey bra, and one grey long sleeved shirt."
The documents also show police pulled a paper towel out of "a bathroom trash can with suspected blood on it."
On line after line of the search warrant returns, police documented taking swabs of suspected blood from walls throughout the home. The documents also state Haley is 4'11", but when her brother-in-law checked her car, the driver's seat was pushed all the way back.
Haley's family is desperate for answers.
"As time goes on I guess you start losing a little bit of hope, but I'm very hopeful that she's still with us," Roman said.
